NINE
It was a silent ride back to Kearney Park and the Ren Fair. It was better this way. I could feel the sadness coming off of Justin, and I didnât know what to say or do to make him feel better.
He followed me to our booth and stood at one of the small windows, looking out at the fairgoers as they walked around with their balloons, painted faces, and corn dogs dripping with mustard. The sadness pouring off of him was beginning to really get to me. I normally block the feelings of others, because most people are amplifiers, blasting their emotions out into the air around them. I had to learn quickly to block these emotions or they became my own. Sometimes, they still get away from me, and strong emotions like hate and fear leak through whether I want them to or not.
I think thatâs why I love being with Cavanaugh. Aside from the fact that he is the most gorgeous guy, both inside and out, that I have ever met, he is the only person Iâve ever met whose emotion I canât feel, unless he is really angry.
Kelli had already left for the day, and my mom and dad were manning the booth until the fair closed for the night.
âRommy,â my mom said, âI didnât think you would be back. Why donât you go home, lovey.â
I sighed. I didnât want to tell my mom about Justin right now. Especially with him only standing a few feet away. âIâm helping on a case, Mom,â I said, in that vague way that we answer our parents when we donât want to tell them exactly what weâre doing.
Knowing that I needed to get Justin out there to help jog his memory, I waved good-bye to my parents and, with Justin trailing behind me, went in search for his cousin and his teammates.
I found them at the tournament participantsâ campsite, huddled around an unlit bonfire. I was surprised to see that the furred bikini girls had joined Justinâs teammates. Christy, the girl Justin had been trying to talk to, was crying. I thought it odd that her friends were not trying to console her. I sighed in resignation. I had to talk to these kids, and I hated the fact that I was going to upset them even more than they already were. I turned to Justin to see if just being in this area brought back any memory of the night before.
He was no longer behind me. In fact, he was nowhere I could see. I turned in a circle, searching, and I finally spotted him winding his way through the tents. I hurried after him, trying my best to catch up without looking like an idiot. He was some ways ahead of me, and I had to scramble to keep up. Twice I ran into people, and I had to apologize repeatedly for knocking down some little guy dressed as a goat. I turned down a row of tents and I lost him.
